When snow or ice make traveling up and down Renton Hill treacherous (as it certainly has this winter!), the city opens the gate on Beacon Way at Philip Arnold Park, which normally remains closed to prevent people from using Renton Hill as a shortcut to downtown and 405. Beacon Way only has one slight incline, but is otherwise flat all the way to Puget Drive SE, which is almost always heavily plowed, de-iced, and sanded during winter weather events. Puget Drive will take you all the way down to either Benson Rd. or Talbot Rd. Of course, the best way to stay safe during winter weather is to stay home, but it’s nice to have an emergency route when needed.
